Between holidaying wildly, I took a couple of photos backstage at the Myer show last Thursday night.
See… That’s me, in my cute Saint Augustine Academy (thankyou! and thanks, too, for the fact the washing label instructs me to put it in the washing machine, and dryer! miracle!) black dress, holding the camera…
But I know.
No one wants to see me.
You want to see models.
Sonny made me take beauty shots… with a flash… ugh! That lasted about two minutes with me!
Back to ambient light and it’s nuances…
I love the hair glitter.
The girls did a lot of waiting. They had been there the day before, for a rehearsal, then that day since 7.30am. For a show that wasn’t on for 12 more hours!
A bit ridiculous when you consider they often will have only around an hour before a show, during any fashion week.
So they wait…
and try to keep warm…
Showtime
Shoes not made for walking – not even the distance of the runway.
Jennifer. She loves that camera…
Now, the title of this post is not supposed to be insulting to Myer in any way, but to query the elusiveness of it’s ambassador/spokesmodel. Sure, I don’t imagine Jennifer Hawkins would necessarily throw herself at my lens, but it seems she has an aversion to looking at other’s lens, as well. A quick search on google images can attest to the fact that ‘our Jen’ doesn’t really go for a direct-to-camera, looking-down-the-barrel kind of photo, preferring the unwittingly-caught-by-an-unknown-snapper kind of look.
I would not have noticed this without the ‘official’ Myer backstage photographer pointing it out to me, after trying to get a couple of beauty shots of her. I couldn’t help but wonder if it was some kind of image control of Jennifer’s, rather than any insecurity. But then I wondered about the appropriateness of that, given her role as a representative in such a big, image-driven company. Undoubtedly on a comfortable pay cheque, with her own private dressing room away from other models, (gawd, I hate the cult of celebrity afforded to people on such superficial bases) it’s surprising Myer don’t have more to say about it.
Weird too, given her media image is that of one so down to earth, so natural. The mums and dads love her… “How about that Jen! She’s just so lovely, and so down to earth”, they say. Just a shame she won’t look at a bloody camera, and give the audience a big smile
