Another addition to my catalogue of unique accommodation, Codrington Gardens near Port Fairy in Victoria appeals to rail buffs, and….
everyone else
It’s at a blink and you’ll miss it turn off the main road, near a wind farm, but down the drive is something very special.
For some of my school life, I used to travel by train, long enough ago that many of the trains were the ones fondly called ‘red rattlers’.
Red, the colour of them, rattlers, well you get the drift.
They are still my favourite train, and I well remember standing in the open doorways on hot days hanging the odd body part out and feeling the freedom in the breeze.
Doors and windows that could be opened, that’s one of my simple pleasures.
Codrington Gardens is a B and B that takes you from A to B with quirky warmth – especially if it’s a red rattler that can tug your heart strings.
So charming
We could only stay for one night, and didn’t eat dinner there, though the next morning I learnt about the dining room which serves (what sounds like delicious) breakfasts and dinners.
I say delicious with the authority that I am a very fussy – only espresso, only good, well-made espresso – coffee drinker, and Geoff our friendly host makes a great one.
All of these signs are so familiar to me, but don’t think the bossiness in them at all reflects the attidude at Codrington, cos is nothing but friendly. While I only chatted with Geoff, he has a lovely vision for his B and B and is happy to share it with you.
It’s a place you want to spend time in.
Codrington was ‘gardens’ before it had the accommodation, so the gardens are expansive and picturesque
A small cornucopia of animals.
I’m so keen to get bees – just don’t tell my neighbours
The sheep under this coat is called ‘Horse’.
There are also peacocks, dogs, cats, chickens,
and Cockie,
Pictured here with Mr Absolutely Suckered In
and here, too
and then Cockie proves how good the coffee is…
before climbing on to me for a quick re-enactment of an old Dolly shoot I did…
(hehehe, Dear Photograph, I remember the days when my skin was so smooth it looked like it had been photoshopped before photoshop was invented)
and happiness.
If you are in the area, stay at Codrington. It’s delightful, delicious, and delovely enough to make a destination out of a pit-stop.
