Shame Queens of the Stoneage didn't play my favourite, but I guess it's fairly old now. Actually, they only played two songs that I did know, so it was probably a good thing that we were in the true nosebleed section, upstairs at the Enmore (I love it up there. Did a shoot there once, can't remember what for).
A good thing, too, as Sverker and I are

forkin' a lot older than we used to be,
so having seats at a gig was kinda nice.
Very average photos taken with my new Nokia N8 phone. 12mp camera doesn't count for much in these conditions…
Really, I think we could have just stood on the street outside, ticketless, and just listened. The music was great, but visually, the performance was boring.
Josh Homme (hommenahommenahommena) came across as flat and a little soulless. Maybe I'm jaded from my recent gigs with passionate, electric performers, but he's got some fairly poncy moves. His 6'5" stature makes his guitar look miniature and he's got all the dance style of a 13yr old rang* at a Blue Light Disco – you know, that side-to-side vauge hip shuffle. Between every song stage hands ran about changing instruments and delivering drinks, it was all too well-oiled for me. Performance of the night went to the guy with the inflatable guitar who played it like a mad rock demon over the balcony balustrade, then endowed me with a sweaty kiss as I passed him – oh joy.
The seething mass below…
But, as I said, the music rocked – the sound upstairs in the Enmore is better than down, and from an aural perspective the only thing that could have improved it would have been an appearance by the gravel-voiced Mark Lanegan.
It wasn't until the encore that anything I knew the words to got played. It didn't matter. QOTSA sound is so consistent I was bound to enjoy it all, and did.
Just on the subject of encores, though, is it necessary to go through all that palaver each time? We all know you will still have up to six more songs ready to go, and will come back regardless to play them. Why not do away with the word 'encore', and lets just call it 'smoko' from now on, Ok?
*No, I'm not a ranga-basher. Not only is my sister one, but I was for many years, but in this instance it helps to paint the picture.
