I've been thinking. I know this is something that often gets me into trouble, but I've been doing it again.
I've been thinking about kids. About the worry and concern we place on every aspect of their being.
Look, I'm as guilty of this as the next person, but maybe now (since I've been thinking), I might worry a bit less.
We all seem to be so worried that we may fail as a parent, fail our kids, if we allow them to be different from anyone else. We want to act early. Jump on anything that is inconsistent with the majority. Now we have a label for everything, and with those labels is an obligation to act. The child of the past who became bored easily, was pedantic, walked a lot on tip toes, was shy, or tended to fidget now has a label, and with that label comes action to correct. Bad parenting no longer seems to be a diagnosis My own children could probably have all manner of labels applied to them – thankfully bad parenting isn't as commonly tossed about as it once was, though in quite a few cases it still should be.
Personality disorders used to be just personalities. Are we losing our character? And parents have so much more to blame themselves for… was it the triple antigen, the tequila slammers before I knew I was pregnant, not breastfeeding?
About labels we give kids
We are narrowing our acceptance of 'normal' and by acting to correct these perceived faults, we are heading more towards a society of homogenised humans.
