One of my common phrases, of which there are many, relates to the old Murphy's Law of; if you are waiting for something to happen, as soon as you start something else, what you are awaiting will happen.
More proactive than the proverbial 'watched pot' (it has been proven in extensive lab testing involving a group of schoolgirls and cigarettes), the most common analogy (and the source of my phrase) comes from waiting at the bus stop, train station, wharf, etc, and waiting,
and waiting,
then choosing,
that's right, choosing to light a cigarette, in order to make the transport appear.
Anyone who's anyone knows this is how the public transport system used to work (I don't smoke now, so cannot verify if it still has power). It was discovered through a process of trial and error, then tested thoroughly before becoming an agreed theory, set in stone .
This concept has a myriad of applications – I know because I have cause to often say "It's like lighting a cigarette to make the bus come"
But now folks, like so many grass-roots things in this modern world of ours that are being nay-sayed by worriers (no, I am not advocating smoking, just the insanity of our life-buffering), I see this on a mid north-coast news publication front page
NOW THE BUS WILL NEVER COME!
