Port Augusta was not a destination, only a pit-stop on our way to Lake Gairdner, an impressivly large salt lake on the edge of the Gawler Ranges National Park.
We hired a 4WD in Port Augusta, but the only one big enough for our tribe was fully kitted out with all the mine specs, including a flashing light on the roof, so we were mistaken a couple of times for the local constabulary! We didn't actually need a 4WD, as the road to Mt Ive Station is 2WD access, but it made the trip easier, and came with a CB radio (which we did need out there, as there is no hope of phone reception). I bravely resisted the urge to "Breaker, Breaker" away on the CB – having done it before I know that some people on those radio frequencies get shitty when you jump on, and they don't know you.
We turned off the main road at Iron Knob (yes, I laughed. I'm fairly immature)
Cool!…
Saltbush lamb?…
No, it's not connected.
Love!
Mum and her chicks – nice and close…
We hurriedly checked in at Mt. Ive Station, and raced off for sunset on the lake…
Where the red earth meets the white salt…
