So the week of no sleep came to a thrilling (just not so fashiony) close. More on the end later.
First, there must be beginning.
I arrived at the Overseas Passenger Terminal (the main site for Sydney's fashion week shows), on Monday morning, only to be sent back on the bus by Sonny who needed to replace one of his misplaced flash cables. A couple of buses and some seriously fast high-heeled walking got me up to Foto Reisel and back again in time for the Camilla show.
A little bit of history here…
I've only been to two shows ever (that I wasn't in, and that was so long ago that it was virtually Triassic couture). I spent a short while backstage at the Karen Walker show in New York last September, and also got to sit in on Narcisco Rodriguez. And that's pretty much the extent of it. Here, last week in Sydney, I had assumed I would be spending all my time holed up in the media room (as I did last year at the Tribeca Grand), uploading files for Sonny, but when I walked in to where all the girls were waiting backstage, Sonny just told me to start shooting.
I still had Scott's tilt-shift lens on, and for the Camilla kaftans, it was a cool look. Here's a small sample…
CAMILLA
Love the colours.
My kids were pretty excited I had got to photograph the Avatar girls.
The first of many times I would hear "photographers back in the box!", meaning, stop elbowing each other out of the way trying to get the best shot of the girls because you are disturbing the stylists, make-up and hair people doing those last minute touch-ups. The 'box' is a masking taped area of the floor, still in sight of the happenings (especially if you are extra tall or extra pushy), but out of the way of everyone else.
After "photographers back in the box" came "except for the guy in the hat, he can stay". I'm sure I'm not the only one in the box who wondered why Sonny is allowed to stay. I'm fairly certain, though, I was the only one in the box who was happy that he is.
