Aubais, like it’s nearby counterpart of St Genies des Mourgues where we stayed on our last visit, is a really, really cute town on the road between Montpellier and Nimes.
Behind high stone walls and rustic wooden doors are lush gardens and beautiful maisons.
Our room for the night was in one of them. La Demeure is a charming chambre d’hote with views over clay roofs and a swimming pool.
The rooms are big and comfortable.
But it’s the town that I really liked.
We wandered it’s narrow streets on our way to the teeny restaurant where we had dinner, and there was so much to photograph!
And like St Genie des Mourgues, and probably plenty of other towns in the area, just about every door and entrance way is embellished with stencils.
They are called ’empegue’, and are stencilled on houses each year in August by local youths. A relic of the conscription era, (each one is dated) now they are added as a sign that the household has contributed to the festivities of Aubade – a celebration of youth.
It was that time on a summer evening, when it’s still light and warm and all the cats come out to street-watch.
Can you spot this one?….
Dinner was mussels, with a Keen’s Curry kind of flavour which sounds bad, and stained my fingers yellow, and was served in a plastic tub, but was also very moreish.
This dreadlocked dog was also dining there.
Cool, eh!
