I love children’s stories. I particularly love Dr
Seuss, and I’m a damn entertaining reader, if you must know. Naturally, in my
line of business, I read a lot of them. Today, I had the pleasure of reading
“Little Mermaid”. It’s a tale that’s been around for a number of
years, though I don’t ever recall reading it.
It runs along the lines of a love story.
Lemme talk you thru it.
Mermaid surfaces one day, looks up at a boat and
falls in love with some bloke on the deck (this bloke does not have a
moustache, so yes, I’m just as confused as you). Naturally, the bloke is a
prince, but that’s by the by in this story. So, mermaid wants to marry bloke
after this sighting. She heads forthwith to the sea witch and the sea witch
tells her that she can make her land-bound, with legs. Sweet? Nup, not exactly.
She can have legs, but they will cause her great pain, and she will lose her
beautiful singing voice, not only for singing, but altogether. Mermaid thinks
“Tops!” I still get to marry the bloke. But wait, there’s more. If
the bloke chooses not to marry the silent, pained one, and instead marries
another, dear mermaid will cease to be, either mermaid or silent, pained human,
and will become sea foam.
Okey Dokey. I was lost with falling for a guy on a
boat with no mo, but this chick has really upped the ante.
Mermaid took the legs/no voice deal. She hung out
with the bloke for a bit. Danced for him on her aching legs, and he still
dumped her and married another. She did have one last chance at liberty, she
could have killed him on his wedding night and just returned to being a
mermaid, but no, that poor sucker sacrificed herself. She took the sea foam
option. So next time you dive amongst the waves you can think of all the
stooooopid chicks who forgot that life can be OK without blokes on boats!
Is it any wonder that girls make dumb choices with
men when this is what we are fed at an early age? For the record, my listening
audience were well aware of how abhorrent I found the tale, and were in total
agreeance with me at the end.
