When in FNQ, croc-spotting is a must-do.
There are a number of tours available, but I can save you the trouble of choosing by telling you to go with Bruce Belcher.
He has a family-run business, and with 25 years on the job, if there is a croc to spot, Bruce’s keen eye will spot it.
They have an idyllic plot on the river, and the garden is filled with delightfully tropical flowers like this ginger
and these amazing blue/green pods hiding among the other foliage. The colour pops so much it looks plastic!
a close-up look through Sonny’s lens…
I highly recommend the sunset cruise. It’s a beautiful time of day, and Bruce and his wife, Zona lay on a cocktail hour feast…
with wines and beer for the grown-ups, and, if they want them,
slushies for the kids…
But old man river, here, is on the lookout for the crocs…
There’s one!…..
…What do you mean you can’t see it?
Look at that dark shadow.
Imagine you are swimming there…
You wouldn’t
Have
A
Clue it was so near.
But Bruce knew…
This is a big bloke, called Scarface. We followed him as he snaked a path along the surface of the water.
Calm and slow
Bruce told us all about the saltwater crocodiles, the environment they share, and who they share it with.
It was interesting, exciting, and relaxing (now that’s some combination!)
I didn’t have an ideal lens for croc-spotting, neither did Sonny, but you can see more pictures on his blog.
Crocs aren’t all big and scary. There’s cute little baby ones too!
From a litter of (I think Bruce said this last one was eleven) only one of these little guys will evade all the predators, and go on to be an adult.
Mangroves…
and Daintree River gold..
A perfect afternoon.
