Girl's afternoon out…
Hilda took Belle, India and I to Horst Casle, not far from their house.
As far as castles go, it was a little on the small side, but impressive nonetheless with castle-like trappings such as a moat and a midnight-rider ghost.
India peers into the 'long drop' toilet – not sure what she's looking for.
Look, I even got a shot of the ghost!
A fish is caught…
What did you bring me my dear friend, to keep me from the gallows pole?…
The nearby hanging tree.
A few days later we tripped off to Ghent for a look at Gravensteen Castle, which I had visited with my film camera last time I came to Europe.
First, some traditional Belgian food, that's not chocolate, or mussels, but was yummy anyway.
Sonny, I can't remember what it was called? Something to do with water??
and croquetjes…. mmmmmmmm
Around Ghent
I think this is a good idea (walking around Paris, at the moment, avoiding dog shit is a superior challenge), but would have loved to get a photo of one of these stencils with a poo sitting in the middle of it.
Gravensteen was built back in 1180, and prior to that, a wooden castle stood on the site, so it's a nice bit of a history lesson for the kids – though they were far more impressed with the implements of torture on display.
