Dirty I'd missed the last Sydney gig (also at the Vanguard) cos I was in Fiji (yeah, not so tough, I know), I was a happy girl going to see Gentle Ben, and on my birthday weekend no less.
I haven't been to The Vanguard before but I was impressed. A classy joint with red curtains, and those 70's boob-shaped champagne glasses that remind me of my childhood.
Impressed, too, with the support. Never heard of this chick, Kira Puru (and the Bruise), but she is a divine chanteuse belting out blues peppered with a bit of funk, glass of red wine in hand, with her coiffed hair and a smooth, full face reminiscent of a young Billie Holiday.
The venue was an ideal backdrop.
I liked it so much I bought an EP
Beautiful
Then
Gentle Ben….
What can I say that I haven't already said here and here?
Never disappoints?
Witty and delicious lyrics delivered with utmost style and pizazz?
Toe-tapping, hip-jigging fun?
Marry me?*
A transcendent gig.
*No, Sonny-my-love, of course I don't mean 'marry me'…
…I know you'll propose to me one day…..
