A stunning drive, to be sure, but I feel like I've seen it all before in a thousand books, posters and articles.
And because of that, I had to work hard to find something I wanted to photograph. Something that for me, would be a different angle, a little inspiring because it was new.
If it was swimming weather I would be busting to get down there for a swim.
We stopped at Cheese World (yup, it's as cheesy as it sounds, and don't expect tastings – this place is not for the connoisseur) in Warrnambool and stocked up on salami and cheese for lunch. The museum attached to the shop is interesting, and if you want to check out some antique machinery, bits and bobs, it's worth a visit, even if the cheese shop and 'restaurant' isn't.
Lunch with a view
and a seagull or two
Beautiful scenery
Too many tour buses
and everyone pointing their camera.
It's like the Mona Lisa. We've all seen it in pictures, so why do people stand in the Louvre photographing it?
I'm not going to whinge about this shot, though…
a few of the twelve…
We overnighted in Apollo Bay at Rayville Boathouses, after driving around at seven o'clock at night asking at every motel, then looking for a caravan park to no avail.
Turns out it was the best of the bunch. Away from the town centre, with the sound of the surf to lull you to sleep, the two storey cottages even had spas a combustion heater!
We had a nice Italian dinner at Restaurant Casalingo, before a warm and cosy sleep.
The next morning we looked for breakfast, and found a bakery on the shopping strip. I'm going to talk the bakery up, because they do something that all bakeries should.
You see, I hate the way bakers (and so many other food providores) have to throw out their leftover unsold items at the end of the day. The Great Ocean Road Fish and Loaves doesn't do that. They have a basket full of bagged-up goodies, and they offer a bag of day-old bread rolls, or doughnuts, or a baguette free with every purchase.
It is a perfect idea, and I hope the idea catches on everywhere.
Heading towards Melbourne, we wondered why so many cars were parked in awkward places along the bends of the road, people looking up into the trees, then we saw them…
A little community of koalas – very exciting for us – they are elusive creatures, and none of us have been lucky enough to see them in the wild before.
Cuties…
…take away all cynicism.
So does
Belle. The belle of Bells…
